FISHING
FLOAT, BLUE, SET OF 3
The sea had
only just withdrawn, and I was the first to walk
the pristine flood line. Empty shells, wood
beams, bottles and frayed pieces of cable were
thrown together. Seemingly at random, organized
in an abstract way. I don't know what I expected
to find, just looking for that unique shell, a
message-in-a-bottle? The morning sun reflected
off a half embedded piece of glass and bending
down I pulled it out. How many thousands of
miles did it travel? How many months or even
years? Had it belonged to a fisherman from
Japan, the Azores, Crete, Tahiti? Clear,
affordable glass was really a development of the
last half of the 19th century. Up until then
bottles and other utilitarian products were
simply cast or blown in green or brownish glass.
Fishing floats are hand blown using recycled
bottle glass.

DORY OAR,
WALNUT
Sturdy, rugged
oars, their design going back over eons. Used on
lifeboats, tenders, Grand Banks dories, fishing
dinghies and Royal Barges. Nearly always used by
a boatman with two strong arms and a supple
back, because rowing goes backwards in a sense.
The rower looks towards the back of the boat,
still does, and has been doing this for
thousands of years.

VARSITY
OAR
The epitome of
rowing is the 4¼ mile boat race between the
eights of Cambridge and Oxford in Britain, and
Yale and Harvard in the USA. This tradition
combines muscle, tactics and team coordination,
and ends for the victorious team with a
traditional immersion of the coxswain in
sometimes frigid waters, followed by parties
definitely not lacking in a decent supply of the
right spirits.

SHIP'S
BELLS
Experienced
navigators learned to keep one eye on a clock on
the other on the sky. Time was used to regulate
the ship's watch: shifts of four hours, divided
into eight halves, with every half called a
"glass". Helmsmen handled the sand hourglass and
signaled the progress of the watch by sounding
the ship's bell. Less precise than clocks,
hourglasses belong to the Age of Sail, whereas
ship's bells are still used to much effect
during periods of dense fog. In some ports along
the coast of Northern Europe, the tradition of
giving a ship's bell as a housewarming gift has
never gone out of style. These ship's bells are
the highest quality on the market, featuring
clear and solid sound, sand-cast heavy brass
construction and heavy cotton lanyards, all in
an attractive gift package.

BRONZE
MINER'S LAMP
A solid,
chunky lamp. This was the first lamp trusted for
use in mines. Companion of the legendary canary
in a cage brought down into the mines. The lamp,
its characteristic shape designed to ignore
flammable gases seeping out of rock and ore. The
bird being the first to signal bad news, by
fainting and positioning itself legs up. Our
lamp is an authentic replica of an early German
miner's lamp, heavy bronze construction.
Replaceable wick, leak-proof kerosene container.

3 MINUTE
SANDGLASS
Ship’s
hourglasses were calibrated to the half hours of
the ship’s watch, and if the helmsman didn’t
turn the glass too early it actually doubled in
defining longitude. Navigators tried to keep
count of the hours; the galleons wrecked on the
western Australian reefs remind us of the perils
of incorrectly kept time. Comes gift packaged.
